Middle School Electives

    • AVID
      • AVID is a regularly scheduled elective class that prepares students with academic potential for success in college. AVID students are expected to maintain at least a "C" average in scholarship and citizenship, to study a minimum of two hours per night, and to enroll in college preparatory classes. The AVID student's goal is to enroll in a four-year university.
      • The AVID program has three areas of focus:
        1. Students receive academic instruction in writing and in the following skills - note taking, studying, test taking and organization;
        2. Students receive academic support from college tutors through collaborative groups and peer counseling;
        3. Students are motivated to pursue academic excellence through cultural and college field trips, classroom guest speakers, and AVID team building.
    • PLUS
      • Student leaders are trained in class to facilitate a series of PLUS activities that engage students in conversations and community building. These pro-social bonding moments create dialogue between pockets of students on a campus, which help build stronger understanding, respect, and empathy towards one another. Students in the PLUS class become role models for other students, and lead cultural change for the entire school.
        • PLTW
          • PLTW Gateway provides an engineering curriculum for middle school students that challenges, inspires, and offers schools variety and flexibility. Students get rigorous and relevant experiences through activity-, project-, and problem-based learning. They use industry-leading technology to solve problems while gaining skills in communication, collaboration, critical-thinking, and creativity. Students use structured approaches, like the engineering design process to become problem solvers. They discover that trying different approaches and solutions is an essential part of the learning process.
    • SKILLS USA
      • Representing more than 444,000 career and technical education students and teachers, SkillsUSA chapters thrive in middle schools, high schools and college/postsecondary institutions nationwide. Our mission is accomplished through the SkillsUSA Framework of Personal Skills, Workplace Skills and Technical Skills Grounded in Academics, which is integrated into classroom curriculum. Through the Framework, SkillsUSA students hone their hands-on skills against current industry standards in more than 100 occupational areas, from 3D Animation to Welding and nearly everything in between. At the same time, they develop the transformative career-readiness skills — teamwork, communication, professionalism, leadership and more — that fuel career and life success. A vital solution to the ongoing skills gap, where more highly skilled jobs are available than skilled professionals ready to fill them, SkillsUSA has served over 15 million diverse, difference-making members since 1965.

    • YCP
      • YCP uses filmmaking to engage students, strengthen academic skills, and foster personal growth. Across all formats, YCP supports English development, social-emotional learning, and career readiness. Students gain confidence, build community, and share their work at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. The filmmaking mentors guide students through the process of creating a short narrative film.
